CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DEPARTMENT
153. The primary task of the C.I.D. is the investigation of crime, the detection, apprehension and prosecution of those responsible and the recovery of stolen property. The C.I.D., by virtue of plain clothes patrols, and the accumulation of intelligence, contributes greatly to the prevention of crime and the maintenance of order. It consists of a body of investigators and detective officers aided by specialists and a well-developed system of records. An Assistant Commissioner directs the Department, assisted by a Deputy Director and seven Assistant Directors, all Gazetted Officers. The work of certain specialized units of the C.I.D. is described in the following paragraphs.
Identification Bureau
154. The Identification Bureau consists of the main fingerprint records section, the scene of crime section, a photographic section and the questioned documents section.
