SERIOUS CRIME

Murder and Manslaughter

87. There were twenty eight cases of death by violence during the year, of which twenty four were detected. The motives in these cases varied from avarice, love affairs, insanity and jealousy. In one case in which a Warder of the Cape Collinson Training Centre was killed by four inmates, escape was the motive. Convictions were obtained in fifteen cases, while seven cases were pending at the end of the period. In the remaining two cases detected the assailants committed suicide before they could be arrested.

88. A total of twenty nine persons were arrested and charged in connexion with the twenty four cases detected. Of these eight were sentenced to death for murder, one was found guilty but insane, four were found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to various terms of imprisonment and one was discharged. The remaining fifteen were awaiting trial at the end of the year.

Attempted Murder

89. A total of eleven cases of Attempted Murder were recorded and all these cases were detected. Convictions were obtained in eight cases. and in the remaining three the persons responsible committed suicide immediately after committing the offence. Motives were either love affairs or disputes over property.

Serious Assaults

90.

Included under this heading are all woundings and the throwing of corrosive fluid. The number of cases increased by seventy two to a total of 436 compared with the 1957/58 period. 381 (87%) were cleared up.

Indecent Assaults and Sexual Offences

91. The number of offences recorded during the year was 172, an increase of forty seven over the previous period. The majority of offences were those of minor indecent assault upon females. There was one case of Trafficking in Females recorded. Convictions were obtained in 126 cases.

Offences against Property

92. Despite the problems of an increasing population and over- crowded conditions in the urban areas, there was a further reduction in crimes committed against property. The number of cases reported
