6. Recommendations affecting salaries and pensions of the Rank and File were submitted to Government during the year, and were referred to a Salaries Commission which was appointed in October 1958 and which commenced deliberations in February 1959.

VISITS AND INSPECTIONS

7. The main event of the year was the visit of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, on 6th March, 1959. This was the first Royal visit since that of Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent in 1952. The success of police arrangements made in connexion with the intensive programme of functions was due in no small measure to the splendid behaviour and co-operation of the public who turned out in large numbers to see His Royal Highness and to the hard work of both the Regular and Auxiliary Police who cheerfully performed long and arduous tours of duty during the period of the visit.

INSPECTION OF THE FORCE

8. His Excellency the Governor Sir Robert Brown Black, K.C.M.G., O.B.E., carried out his annual review of the Force on 7th December, 1958 and presented awards to eight Police Officers.
