the results were good. 889 men qualified either as marksmen or 1st class shots.
51. A knowledge of English for police officers in the Colony is obviously a great asset and while study of the language is not compul- sory all members of the Rank and File are encouraged to attend the classes organized. No allowance is paid other than a bonus of $100 on passing the Stage V, or highest, examination. During the year a total of 179 officers qualified for this bonus, bringing the total number of officers who hold the Stage V certificate up to 457. The Force has the services of eleven English teachers who conduct classes regularly throughout the Colony.
INTERNAL SECURITY TRAINING
52. The training of the Force in para-military duties has progressed very satisfactorily during the year. It will be appreciated that on mobilization a man may be detailed to perform any one of a wide range of duties in each of which he must therefore be proficient. This adds heavily to an already extensive training programme. Riot drill and internal security training generally are carried out in Districts and Divisions and advanced training is provided for in the Police Training Contingent described in paragraph sixty below.
PART IV
THE UNIFORM BRANCH
GENERAL
53. The main strength of the Uniform Branch was deployed in the three Districts of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the newly created one of the New Territories which includes the Marine Division. Prior to April 1957, Kowloon, with the New Territories and Marine formed a single District, but it had become increasingly apparent that this constituted too heavy a task for one commanding officer. The re- organization has clearly increased efficiency.
54. Districts are composed of Divisions under the command of Gazetted Officers, generally with a Chief Inspector as second in com- mand. Divisions contain sub-Divisions in the charge of Inspectors or Sub-Inspectors, and police posts in the charge of N.C.O.s.
55. Standard beat and patrol systems were operated in all urban and suburban areas. In the rural areas village penetration patrols
