ANNEX (1)

REPORT OF THE GOVERNMENT CHEMICAL LABORATORY. The volume of work handled by the Laboratory during the year 1947 has been considerably higher than in any previous year, A comparative table of samples analysed is given, showing figures for the period September, 1945-December, 1946, and for the year 1947.

splashed with the liquid during a typhoon at sea. Various improvised bombs were examined during the early part of the year, an interesting example being a tin of pioric acid mixed with gramophone needles, fitted with a detonator and fuse. Various exhibits have been examined during the recent outbreak of acid-throwing.

1. The routine supervision of the reservoirs and diter beils, and of top samples from various districts in the Colony, accounts for the bulk of the water samples. From the chemical standpoint the quality of the public water supply has been uniformly excellent. The supply of water to ships from waterboula hun baen períodically checked for possible scn-water contamination.

2. There has, since the war, been no great scope for the operation of the Food and Drags Ordinance, but the small local freeb milk supply has been periódically examined for quality, and the pasteurization checked.

3. With the return of the Government Chemist (Imports and Exports llepartament) in March, 1947, this work cessed to be carried out in the Laboratory, although occasional examinations are carried out for which facilítics do not yet exist in the Importe and Exports Department Laboratory.

4. Chemico-legal work increased considerably, and separate tables are giren showing the various samples and specimens dealt with.
