Records for births are incomplete owing to the hostilities in December, 1941, and the subuequent lack of interest in Birth Registration manifested by the Japanese during the period 1942- 1946 (August). Birth registration in Hong Kong from 1940 to 1947 has been illustrated graphically in the graph G. 25/104 included as Annex J. of this report.
18. The birth rate per mille for 1947 is estimated to be 35.0 as compared with 26.6 in 1946 and 41.9 in 1940.
19. In addition 2,352 post registered births were recorded.
C. Deaths.
20. The following table shows the number of deaths registered during the years 1940 to 1947 and the number of deaths registered monthly from October, 1945 to December, 1947:
November December 21. Death registration in Hong Kong from 1940 to 1947 bas been illustrated in the graph G. 25/104 included as Aones ). of this report, Registration was unsatisfactory throughout the Japanese occupation and many thousands of bodies never received burial in recognised cametries.
The death rate per mille for 1947 is estimated to be 10.9 as compared with 66.9 wood 14.2 for 1940 and 1946 respectively.
D. Infant Mortality.
The number of infant deaths per thousand live births during 1947 was 119. This compares with 109 for 1946, 327 for 1940 and 617 for 1901. There were 1,322 still birdha recoriled giving a rate of 30 per thousand live births. Iu spite of the relatively low infant mortality figure, over one third of all the deaths recorded during the year were in infants under one year.
