In the blood banks 55,374 pints of blood were received, 54,902 pints of which were from the collecting centres of the Hong Kong Red Cross,
An imported case of human rabies was detected in April 1977. Virological examination of brain specimens from 52 domestic animals revealed no rables infection.
868 (29%) of 3,006 clinical cases of viral hepatitis and 1,793 (6%) of 28,491 blood donors were found positive for hepatitis B surface antigen.
Radiology and Oncology
The Institute of Radiology and Oncology comprises three main divisions, radiodiagnostic, radiotherapy and radiation physics.
The radiodiagnostic division provides an X-ray diagnostic service. In all, 28 institutions and 3 mobile chest radiography units were in operation with a total of 755,457 examinations. This represented a decrease of about 6% compared with last year, which was largely attributable to the drop in chest X-ray examinations at the survey centres, chest clinica and mobile radiography
vans.
The radiotherapy division based at Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary Hospitals is the main radiotherapy centre in Hong Kong. It treats more than 90% of all local patients requiring radiotherapy and also some overseas patients. The total number of patients with malignant diseases treated was 3,798, an increase of 7% compared with the previous year.
The radiation physics division provides a film-badge radiation monitoring and protection service for the whole of Hong Kong. During 1977, the film-badge service covered 1,277 radiation workers in various hospitals, X-ray laboratories and industrial undertakings.
Anaesthesia
The anaesthetic service manned 230 operating sessions a week and 7 energency operating theatres on a 24-hour basis for emergencies. A total of 57,401 operations were done under anaesthesia in 1977, an increase of 0.5% compared with 1976.
Forensic Pathology
The Forensic Pathology Service advises and works in close association with the Royal Hong Kong Police Force on the medical aspects of criminology. This includes all homicidal deaths, deaths under suspicious circumstances, sexual offences, and other offences against the person, The professional staff

dealt with a total of 677 autopsies, 884 clinical examinations and blood groupings and 2,947 laboratory examinations in 1977.
Government Laboratory
The Government Laboratory provides chemical and related scientific services for Government Departments. There are two divisions, general and forensic. The total number of items examined in 1977 was 74,647, a decrease of 5% compared with the previous year,

OTHER SERVICES

The total number of staff in the nursing and allied grades is 6,006 who undertake duties in all government hospitals and clinics as well as in the public health services. The slight increase in establishment of 3% is due to the opening of the East Kowloon Polyclinic Stage I in July 1977. and the South Kwai Chung Polyclinic Stage II becoming fully operational in August, 1977.
In the medical division there are five grades; Registered Nurse (General), Registered Nurse (Psy.), Enrolled Nurse (General), Enrolled Nurse (Pay.) and Midwives, whilst in the health division there are another three grades; Health Visitors, Health Auxiliaries and Inoculatore. Seven of these grades have their own source of training schools and at the same time local Chinese residents who have received training in the United Kingdom may be recruited through the Hong Kong Government Office in London.
The Nursing Services benefited by the return of nursing personnel who had successfully completed oversee courses of instruction in nursing administration, mursing education, both in the general and psychiatric areas, community health nursing (psychiatric) and ophthalmic nursing.
Pharmaceutical Service
The pharmaceutical service meets the requirements for drugs, dressinga, surgical instruments and hospital sundries of all government hospitals, clinice and health centres. Items are also supplied to government- assisted institutions on requests, It has a staff of 252 of all grades.
The service also supervises the enforcement of the law pertaining to dangerous drugs, poisons and antibiotics, as governed by the respective ordinances. During the year, 5,793 premises were inspected and 76 prosecutions
were instituted.
