A meeting of the Finance Committee was held in the Council Chamber, the Colonial Secretary (Hon. Sir Thomas Southorn, K.B.E., C.M.G.) presiding.

Votes totalling $41,366, contained in Message No. 2 from H.E. the Governor, being $1,493 under Estimates, 1933 and $39,873 under Estimates, 1934, were considered.

Item No. 10 (1934).―Public Works Extraordinary:―Hong Kong. Miscellaneous. Fire Protection. Government Civil and Mental Hospitals, $3,123.

HON. SIR HENRY POLLOCK.―May I ask with regard to No. 10 how they are getting on with the Mental Asylum?

THE COLONIAL SECRETARY.―There is no building in progress.

HON. SIR HENRY POLLOCK.―Is this the old Mental Hospital?

THE COLONIAL SECRETARY.―Yes.

HON. SIR HENRY POLLOCK.―The one near the Government Civil Hospital? THE COLONIAL SECRETARY.―Yes.

HON. SIR HENRY POLLOCK.―When is work likely to begin on the New Mental Asylum?

THE COLONIAL SECRETARY.―There is no vote in the Estimates for the new Mental Hospital, is there?

THE DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS.―No.

THE COLONIAL SECRETARY.―We are concentrating on the Civil Hospital at the present time.

All the votes were approved.
