Papers

THE COLONIAL SECRETARY, by command of H.E. the Governor, laid on the table the following papers: ― Recommendations of the anti-Piracy Committee; Report of the Director of Public Works for the year 1913.

The Late Sir Kai Ho Kai

HIS EXCELLENCY―Gentlemen,―It was only on the 25th of February last that this Council recorded its great appreciation of the eminent services rendered to if and to the Colony by Sir Kai Ho Kai during the long period of 24 years during which he had been a Member of the Council, his seat upon which he was

obliged to resign owing to ill-health. To-day I have to ask you to record our deep sorrow at his untimely death and our heartfelt sympathy with his widow and his family in their bereavement The council has so recently expressed its sense of the devoted and valuable services of Sir Kai Ho Kai, and the Chinese Community, in the address which they presented to him, and the public Press in numerous appreciative articles at the time of his resignation and again on his death have recorded so fully the splendid work done for the Chinese Community and for the whole Colony by our deceased colleague and friend, that it is unnecessary for me to dilate further upon his services now. We have followed him to the grave with sorrow, we cherish his memory with respect, we treasure with admiration the example he has set us all of devotion to public duty. It is with a heavy heart that I move the resolution which in terms too inadequate records our feelings at this hour.

HON. MR. WEI YUK―I beg to second the resolution moved by your Excellency.

The members of Council then stood, and his Excellency read the resolution in the following terms:―

"This Council desires to record its deep sorrow at the death of Sir Kai Ho Kai, for 24 years one of its most brilliant and devoted members: and to tender to his widow and family its heartfelt sympathy with them in their bereavement."

The resolution was passed in silence. Other Business Suspended

THE COLONIAL SECRETARY―Sir, I beg to move that the remaining Orders of the Day be discharged out of respect for the memory of Sir Kai Ho Kai and that the Council do adjourn.

HON. MR. POLLOCK seconded, and the motion was agreed to.

HIS EXCELLENCY ― Council stands adjourned till this day week.
