The Council met today by special summons.
The Minutes of the last Council were read and approved.
William Thomas Bridges, D.C.G., the Acting Colonial Secretary was sworn in a member of the Legislative Council, and took his seat as such at the Council Board.
The Governor stated that Mr. Caldwell had not yet sent in his suggestions for an improved system of Registration, and that, therefor, he was unable to deal with the subject until the receipt of those suggestions.
Read a second time and passed, the Ordinance "for extending to this Colony certain Acts of Parliament" being No 3 of 1857 – which was ordered to be published in the Government Gazette.
Read a first time, and ordered to be published for general information, a Draft Ordinance for amending certain provisions of the Fees and Costs Ordinance No 14 of 1856.
The Governor said, that the attorney general had forwarded to him an Ordinance on the subject of Poisoning, which he was not preferred to lay before the Council; but that in deference to the opinion of that officer he had submitted the Ordinance in Draft to the consideration of the Secretary of state for the Colonies.
Some discussion took place with regard to the proposed Seamen's Ordinance, and the Ordinance "for the better repression of certain diseases," but the Governor remarking that they embraced topics of difficulty for their discussion on those enactment was deferred sine die.
The Council then adjourned till Tuesday the 24th Instant, at 1 o'clock, when the Fees and Costs amendment Ordinance will be submitted for the 2nd reading.
