11 new routes were introduced;

58 frequency improvement items were implemented involving 82 buses;

(d) 43 new bus shelters were constructed; and

(e)

the carrying capacity on various routes was increased on 96 occasions through replacing two-axle

buses with three-axle buses.

During the year, KMB commissioned an independent consultant, the City University of Hong Kong, to undertake a large scale market research on air-conditioned bus services. The results revealed that the majority of passengers prefer air-conditioned bus services. Based on the findings of this survey and feedback from other

sources, KMB will

continue to expand

its air-conditioned

services to attract

customers from other

In addition, KMB will consider lowering the fare premium to encourage customers to use the air-conditioned services. It is intended that KMB's air-conditioned bus fleet will gradually increase in response to demand.

Specific marketing programmes were launched during the year to stimulate higher usage of individual routes. A new cross harbour shuttle service, Route No. 100, was introduced to encourage private car users to shift to public transport and thus help alleviate traffic congestion.
