CHOI HUNG ESTATE, (E), CLEARWATER BAY ROAD, KOWLOON

Accommodation
103. This Estate, now under construction, will contain 7,630 flats accommodating about 43,600 people at a nett density of about 1,900 persons per acre. In addition, there will be a precinct with 45 shops and living accommodation attached, a post office, 3 primary schools, 2 secondary schools and an estate office. Estimated total cost of the scheme is $52,460,000.
Clearance
104. In May 1960, Government announced arrangements for clearance and resumption of the 24 acre site and the operation was carried out in August by the Resettlement Department. This involved removing 337 structures containing 2,223 people in 422 families. The clearance was done in 4 phases and extended over 37 acres of land which included the road and drainage reserves on the boundaries of the Authority's site as well as the actual site itself. In addition, 154 cultiva- tors and 34 small factories, some open scrap yards and shops were also reprovisioned elsewhere or compensated on removal.
Site Formation
105. Tenders were invited for site formation in July 1960, Messrs. Wan Hin & Co. being awarded the contract in the sum of $282,150. The work, which includes about 275,000 cu. yds. of filling, 75,000 cu. yds. of cutting, road bottoming and demolition of intruding structures, is now well in hand. Although interrupted to some extent by main drainage works crossing the site, it is expected that it will be completed without any hold-up in the building programme.
Piling
106. The piling contract for the 8 high blocks (20 storeys) was awarded to the Hong Kong Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd., in the sum of $2,345,440, and covers the driving of 2,424 piles. The work is making good progress and at the time of writing 353 piles had been driven successfully.
Building Programme
107. Divided into four phases, the building programme will be let in separate contracts which will overlap and run concurrently over a period
