on the letting and management organization. To commence this letting period soon after the expected completion of Ma Tau Wai Estate it will be necessary to start work on site formation in the middle of 1960.

Clearance

130. In spite of considerable difficulties and delays in the resumption of land and clearance of the site it is hoped to commence site formation in August 1960 and piling of the first phase in October 1960. In the meantime the architects are continuing with preparation of working drawings.

Quantity Surveyors

131. Messrs. Langdon & Every have been appointed as Quantity Surveyors for this scheme.

MA TAU WAI ESTATE, (E), KOWLOON

132. The Authority's fifth estate will be built on a site of 7.162 acres at the junction of Argyle Street and Ma Tau Chung Road, Kowloon, and is the first to be designed by its own architectural staff.

Site

133. The site slopes gently, with a difference of about 20′ 0′′ from south-west to north-east. To the north and north-west sites have been reserved by the P.W.D. for a number of schools, a church, and an extension of the Civil Aid Service training ground, and there is thus no need for the Authority to become involved in the construction or siting of such buildings. The land to the south of the site has been reserved by Government for the construction of police quarters, probably in multi-storey blocks.

Clearance of the site, a topographical survey of which was carried out by the Authority in May 1958, presents no difficulty, as at present it is largely occupied by a disused hutted Army camp. (see Fig. 14).

Planning

134. There are some limiting factors on the site. Along the western boundary a high granite retaining wall exists, and if light and air is not to be restricted, it would not be good to build too close to it. On the south-western boundary there are 6-storey residential buildings, across a 50′ 0′′ wide road, and a wide open space must be maintained between these and the Authority's blocks. The site is also within the restricted flight funnel zone, and buildings are limited in height to 150′ O.D.
