equipped with two 750 K.V.A. transformers and H.T. switch gear to control incoming H.T. cables. These transformers step the voltage down from 6,600 volts to 350-200 volts, the supply then being carried by bus-bars to L.T. panels, and thence to various supply points on the

estate.

FLUSHING SUPPLY

It was originally intended to use filtered sea water for a flushing supply, but this plan was changed after tests indicated that a well supply would be less heavily polluted than harbour water, due to the natural filtration process. The water is unsuitable for gardening purposes owing to its high saline content. The two wells dug proved to yield a more than adequate supply, and no difficulty is being encountered on this score. Worthington-Simpson monobloc centrifugal pumps are fitted, with asbestos pressure pipes and fittings: two spare sets have been fixed in position and connected up so that they can be put into opera- tion immediately in the event of a breakdown in the main installation. Bronze marine-type fittings are used throughout, and water supply and waste pipes are of copper, except for the main trunks, which are of cast-iron.

MAINS WATER

There is a mains water supply, separately metered, to each flat. The Water Authority has agreed, as a much-appreciated concession to the Authority, to reduce meter deposits for each flat from $40 to $15, and the fixing fee for each meter from $70 to $15. The normal procedure for water connexions has been greatly simplified, the fees being collected from tenants on behalf of the Water Authority.

SAI WAN CHUEN (previously known as the CADOGAN STREET ESTATE)

(Architect: Mr. T. S. C. Feltham, A.R.I.B.A.)

The Authority's second estate is at Cadogan Street, Kennedy Town, overlooking the western part of the harbour near Green Island. The site comprises the hillside just to the west of Cadogan Street, about 250 feet south of Victoria Road. It is almost rectangular in shape, and covers an area of 161,000 sq. ft., or about 3.7 acres. The gradients of the site are extremely steep, and the area is broken up by several nullahs. The lowest point is about 50 feet above street level, and the highest 285 feet: this slopes roughly from the south-west down to the north- east, entailing extensive cutting and site formation.
