PRIVATE POST OFFICE BOXES

A private box is used for the reception of postal packets to be called for by the renter or his agent as an alternative to delivery by postman at the place of address. Private post office boxes may be rented at the following Post Offices and are available for the collection of correspondence during the periods indicated:

Rental Charges : The annual rental charges for boxes are:- GPO. Hong Kong and Kowloon Post Office: Large box $60, Small box $40; Other Post Offices: Large box $48, Small box $36: Persons sharing a box are each required to pay 75% of the full rental of the box: The initial minimum period of rental is twelve months and this is renewable (a) for twelve months, or (b) for three months at a time on payment of one quarter of the annual rental. Each portion of three months is considered as a full three months. No refund will be made in respect of boxes. surrendered before expiry of the period of rental.

Keys and Locks: One key is supplied free of charge and additional keys will be supplied on payment of $5 each. No keys other than those supplied by the Postmaster General may be used. All keys remain the property of the Postmaster General and are returnable to him on termination of period of rental. In cases where the renter desires a change of lock he will be required to pay the sum of $15, and to return all keys supplied, or pay the sum of $5 in lieu of each key not returned. One key to the new lock will be supplied free of charge to lessee.

Application for a change of lock should be made to the Postmaster General in writing. The Renter of a box must defray all expenses for damage to such box, or to the lock or keys thereof, if caused by him or due to his negligence.

A Private Box may not be rented in a fictitious name or for an improper purpose. The Postmaster General may refuse to let or re-let a box to any person without assigning any reason for such refusal.

Hours of Access: These may be varied at any time by the Postmaster General.

Transfer of Box Rights, etc. Transfer from one person to another or from one Post Office to another is subject to the approval of the Postmaster General and will only be considered in the case of bona fide change of business or title or other sufficient reason. Applications to share a box should be forwarded to the Postmaster General. In all such cases each private person or persons, or firms trading under two or more designations will be required to pay 75% of the full rental of the box,

Correspondence for renters of boxes must show the number of the box as part of the address, otherwise it will fall into the normal delivery. Delivery to a private box is in all respects equivalent to personal delivery to the addressee.
