import licence providing they contain articles needed for private use. customs charges will be levied on the first three parcels received by the addressee in any one year providing the parcels contain certain items only (mostly food, tobacco and clothing) within certain limits of quantity, weight and value. Worn clothing, linen and footwear is subject to customs duty. Not more than three parcels containing these articles may be sent to the same addressee in one year. A certificate of disinfection issued by a competent authority such as a Medical Officer or Health, a Sanitary Inspector, a private business house or a firm of dry cleaners must be enclosed with each parcel containing worn clothing, linen or footwear. The certificate must be enclosed in such a way that it will be seen when the parcel is opened. The outer wrapping of the parcel and also the customs declarations must be marked in French "Certificat de désinfection est inséré.”. Medicine is admitted in gift parcels free of customs duty providing the addressee is in possession of the necessary certificate, but it must be sent in separate parcels and not included with other items in gift parcels.

No printed matter (books, periodicals and so on), gramophone records, sound tapes or cinematographic films may be sent as gifts unless the parcel or packet contains nothing but these items.

Custom declarations must be legibly written and must specify in detail the number, weight and value of each item enclosed. Each item must be listed separately.

Packing: Parcels must be strongly packed with inner and outer packing materials adequate for the length of the journey and the protection of the contents.
