Parasites and predators of injurious insects, intended for the control of those insects and exchanged between officially recognized institutions, are admitted in the form of samples only.

The importation of goods liable to customs duty and purchase tax into this country by sample post is in general prohibited, and chargeable goods so imported are liable to forfeiture. The prohibition is relaxed, however, for genuine trade samples and certain other goods as shown below, subject to compliance with the following requirements:

The limits of size or weight and the other conditions mentioned must be observed so far as they are applicable to the particular goods. Each packet must be plainly marked with particulars of the contents, a general description such as Samples Without Value is not sufficient, and, if containing trade samples, with a statement that the goods are genuine trade samples.

Chemicals, Chemicals, liable to ad valorem duty of 25 per cent or more (other than any such goods falling with the provisions of the Dangerous Drugs Act, 1951 (G.B.) ). The gross weight of each packet must not exceed 8 oz., and customs duty at the appropriate rate will be charged. Each packet must be plainly marked c/o The Officer of Customs and Excise in addition to bearing the full name and address of the addressee. A Post Office fee of 1s. Od. for clearance through the Customs will be charged on each packet on which customs duty is levied.

Chicory. Raw chicory in quantities not exceeding 8 oz. net weight per package will be delivered free of duty. Only one sample of the same description of goods, unless of different brands, may be sent each addressee.

Cocoa. Raw cocoa in quantities and under conditions similar to those stated under Chicory above.

Coffee. Raw coffee in quantities and under conditions similar to those stated under Chicory above.

Dyestuffs (synthetic organic) and so on. Synthetic organic dyestuffs (inc. pigment dyestuffs); synthetic organic products of a kind used as luminophores; products of a kind known as optical bleaching agents, substantive to fibre, may be imported subject to the following conditions:

The gross weight of each packet must not exceed 8 oz., and customs duty at the appropriate rate will be charged. Each packet must be marked c/o The Officer of Customs and Excise in addition to bearing the full name and address of the addressee and a declaration that the contents are of no commercial value. A Post Office fee of Is. Od. for clearance through the Customs will be charged on cach packet on which customs duty is levied.

Hops. Packages not exceeding 16 oz. gross weight will be delivered free of duty. Playing Cards. Packages containing one or two packs only will be delivered free of duty provided that one of the corners of each card has been cut to the extent of half an inch along the side and end.

Spirits (except perfumed spirits). Packages each not exceeding 12 oz. gross weight will be delivered on payment of duty at a flat rate of 9s. 6d. each package. Sugar. Sugar and sugar confectionery in quantities and under conditions similar to those stated under Chicory above.

Tea. Packages not exceeding 8 oz. gross weight will be delivered free of duty.

Textiles. These may be imported subject to the following conditions:-

The gross weight of each packet must not exceed 16 oz. Only one sample of the same range and colour may be sent to each addressee and each packet must be plainly marked c/o The Officer of Customs and Excise in addition to bearing the full name and address of the addressee.

Duty will be waived in the following cases :

Waste of man-made fibres and yarns not exceeding 4 oz. Fabrics, including narrow woven fabrics, braids and ornamental trimmings in lengths not exceeding 1 yard irrespective of width from selvedge to selvedge. Ribbons in lengths not exceeding 2 yards provided they are snipped at intervals of not more than 9 inches. Make-up articles provided they are so mutilated or defaced as to be obviously irreparable and of no saleable value,
