ORDERS FOR PAYMENT ABROAD

POUNDAGE

The poundage on an ordinary money order for payment abroad is:

14 cents per dollar or part of a dollar, with a minimum charge of 10 cents.

PURCHASE

The printed requisition form supplied for the purchase of orders payable abroad should be used. The full name, title or designation of the payee should be entered on the form. See also paragraph headed AMOUNT AND RESTRICTIONS above.

CROSSING

The sender of a money order to a British Commonwealth country, other than Aden, India or Pakistan may, if he wishes, indicate on the requisition form that the order is to be crossed for payment through a bank. Orders payable in foreign countries may not be crossed.

ADVICE OF PAYMENT

For a supplementary fee of 40c. payable either at the time of issue or subsequently, the sender of a money order payable in any of the countries indicated by the letters AP in the table at end of this section, will be furnished with the date of payment of the order.

TRANSMISSION OF REMITTANCE

A certificate of issue (for retention as a receipt) is handed to the purchaser. Payment is effected by means of a money order made out in the country of payment. Particulars are transmitted by air mail to the postal administration concerned without extra charge to the remitter where such means offers appreciable advantage,

PAYMENT ABROAD

Orders are paid in the currency of the country of payment and payment is subject to the regulations of that country.

The rates of conversion of the amounts of money orders drawn for payment in countries where the currency is other than sterling are subject to variations from day to day, but current rates are notified to Postmasters periodically, and information as to an approximate rate can be obtained at any money order office. In some cases the amounts are advised abroad in sterling and the rate of exchange cannot then be quoted.

As the rates are liable to variation without notice, there is no guarantee that any given rate will be applied to the conversion of an order.

Where payment in the country of destination is arranged through the medium of another country, as shown in the tables on pages 218 to 224 the extra commission charged by the intermediate country is usually 2 pence per £ (15 cents per $HK16).

PERIOD OF VALIDITY

Those payable

Orders are normally valid for 12 months after the month of issue. in the Belgian Congo are valid for five months, and those payable in Austria, Burma, Ceylon, Kenya and Uganda, the Netherlands Antilles, Malaya, Poland and Tanganyika Territory for six months only, after the month of issue.

ALTERATION OF NAME

If an alteration in the name of the payee or sender of an order is required, an application, preferably on the form provided for the purpose, obtainable at any money order office, should be made by the sender to the office at which the order was issued.

DUPLICATES

The payee should apply for a duplicate order to the Chief Office of the country of payment.
