Postal Orders: Postal orders must not be sent outside the scheduled territories (formerly known as the Sterling area). The scheduled territories comprise the British Commonwealth (except Canada), the Republic of Ireland, Burma and certain foreign countries, but British postal orders are not paid in all these places. Those places within the scheduled territories, where British postal orders are paid, are indicated in the table commencing on page 204.
Postage stamps of philatelic interest and similar articles: Postage stamps of philatelic interest and similar articles must not be sent outside the scheduled territories except under a certificate issued by or on behalf of the Exchange Controller. Enquiries regarding the transmission of stamps of philatelic interest and similar article, should be addressed to the Exchange Control Office.
Gift Parcels: In the ordinary course an import licence is necessary before foodstuffs can be imported into Great Britain; also in some cases, an export licence is necessary before goods can be exported from Hong Kong; but unsolicited gift parcels may be sent without a licence under the following conditions (which also refer generally to gift parcels sent to other destinations abroad):
1) parcels must contain only canned foodstuffs, used clean clothing,
soap and medicinal supplies;
2)
the parcels must not contain more than 17 lbs. net foodstuffs; 3) such parcels must be clearly marked Gift and be addressed to
individuals and not to a firm;
4) they must not exceed $80.00 in value; and
5)
not more than one parcel may be sent in one calendar month by any one person to the same recipient. The contents must be declared in detail and the net weight of each article indicated.
AIR MAIL SERVICES
SERVICES AVAILABLE
First class mail (letters, letter packets, air letters and postcards), seconds class mail (printed papers, commercial papers, samples, and in the of countries which accept them, small packets) and parcels may be sent to most overseas countries. The general regulations applicable to ordinary surface mails, as set out in this Guide, apply also to air mails, but particulars of the air postage rates, also the latest times of posting and approximate transmission times are given in the Air Mail Leaflet which may be obtained free from any post office.
