Books and printed matter of all kinds, charts, engravings, etchings, maps, music in books or sheets, photographs, are subject in general to a Customs duty of 25 per cent, ad valorem. The undermentioned articles are, however, exempt from duty:

(a) Newspapers and periodicals; books, engravings, etchings, bound or unbound maps and charts, photographs, imported for the use of the U.S.A.; books, charts, engravings, etchings, lithographic prints, maps, music, photographs, bound or unbound, and which have been printed more than 20 years, or are intended for the use of any religious, educational or learned institution or any State or public library; hydrogra- phic charts and publications issued by scientific and literary associations or academies for their subscribers or exchanges, or publications of individuals for gratuitous private circula- tion, not advertising matter, and public documents issued by foreign governments; books and pamphlets printed wholly or chiefly in languages other than English, blind literature and music, and books used abroad not less than one year, by persons or families from foreign countries.

(b) Photographs and printed papers, other than books, sent in small quantities, and intended for the personal use of the addressee.

PROHIBITIONS. Gold, jewellery, platinum, precious stones, silver,

except in insured boxes, tobacco.

RESTRICTIONS apply to the importation of medicines.

CUSTOMS DUTY. Bound or sewn books are liable to Customs

duty.

GREEN LABEL SERVICE. Green label packets must be conspicu-

ously marked EN DOUANE in addition to bearing a green label.

PROHIBITIONS. Gold, jewellery, platinum, precious stones, silver, except in insured boxes. Bank-notes, currency notes and documents payable to bearer, except in insured letters; patent medicines, except under permit.
