RESTRICTIONS apply to the importation of newspapers and
periodicals.
Engravings, lithographs, maps, photographs (unless admissible as samples and sent singly), pictorial cards, printed or manuscript books bound in bone, tortoiseshell, celluloid, ivory, mother-of-pearl, pearl, or other similar substances or with metal ornamentation must not weigh more than 100 grammes (about 34 ounces).
By sample post the limit of weight is lower than one pound for many articles, for example, tea (gross weight 50 grammes -1 ounces); cinnamon (75 grammes 2 ounces); cocoa, chocolate, coffee beans (in natural state only), and preser- ves; needles, pins and other metal objects and beads (100 grammes 3 ounces). Samples of alcohol and spirits (except volatile oils and oil essences), not exceeding seven centilitres (.49 of a gill) for each consignment are admitted if in bottles with plain corks, and without the capsules or labels of bottles made up for sale. These limits of weight apply to any total number of packets, including sample packets, sent at the same time by the same sender to the same addressee.
CUSTOMS DECLARATIONS. A green Customs label should be affixed to all packets containing books (including editions of music); a separate Customs declaration is also required.
