entertained in respect of a closed packet which has been opened. If more convenient, the packet may be taken to any post office for the weight to be verified unless it was posted abroad, in which case it should be taken to the General Post Office.

The unit of weight for letters from countries using the metric system is 20 grammes (less than ounce), and not one ounce as in the case of countries using the avoirdupois system; and surcharges may frequently be explained by the difference in the units of weight.

"ROUND THE WORLD" LETTERS

Round the world letters or other articles with the obvious intention of obtaining cancellation marks or of rendering them objects of curiosity or interest are prohibited. Letters and other articles prepared in such a way as to receive successive addresses are not admitted.

CORRESPONDENCE EXEMPT FROM POST-

AGE

Letters on official business, posted in Hong Kong, from a department of the Government of the Colony, addressed to the United Kingdom or to a British pos- session or protectorate, marked "On His Majesty's Service," and signed in the lower lefthand corner with the usual signature of the Head or Assistant Head of the department of origin.

LATE FEE SERVICE

The usual time for closing a mail is one hour and a half before the steamer is due to sail.

Unregistered postal packets, except parcels, which are posted after the advertised time of closing the mail are accepted, if handed over the counter and prepaid with an additional fee of 10 cents. The service is only available up to the time the mail is actually closed and the bags sealed.

The late fee service does not apply to postal packets intended for despatch by air mail.
