46. Although the inland parcel service has not previously been used to a significant extent by the public in Hong Kong, there was a sub- stantial increase in the usage of the service during the year when 61,700 parcels were posted, compared with 39,300 parcels the previous year— an increase of 57%.

47. Two additional posting boxes were installed in Hong Kong Island and six in Kowloon and the New Territories and at the end of the year there were 520 (including private posting boxes and mail chutes) in use.

48. Six additional motor vehicles were brought into service during the year. Two of them were for the delivery of bulky letter post items on each side of the harbour, two for the conveyance of mails through the harbour tunnel, one for inter-office services in Kowloon, and the sixth for inspection duties in Kowloon and the New Territories. The use of the tunnel, as opposed to conveying mails across the harbour by launches, has facilitated the movement of mail between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. At the end of the year there were 87 mail vehicles of various sizes plus 4 scooters in service.

49. Temporary Post Offices were provided on the occasion of the philatelic exhibition held during the Festival of Hong Kong from the 24th November to 2nd December, 1973, and at the 21st Exhibition of Hong Kong Products from the 11th December, 1973, to 9th January, 1974.

50. The Mobile Post Office operating in the New Territories con- tinued to provide a service which is much valued by people living in

remote areas.

Overseas Services

51. The total number of letter mail items posted to other countries increased to 80.2 millions compared with 79.4 millions in the previous year.

52. Airmail traffic increased by 1.1% to 45.1 millions compared with 44.6 millions in 1972-73. There was a marginal increase in the number of surface items posted which rose to 35.1 millions compared with 34.8 millions for the previous year. The number of small packets to China decreased from 5.8 million to 5.6 million.
