14. The Training Centre is in process of gearing up to a point where some 500 members of staff can be given training each year on basic or advanced courses.

15. One Telecommunications Assistant I attended a 7-week Basic Automatic Telephony course with the Hong Kong Telephone Co. during the period December 1972 to February 1973.

Temporary Staff

16. To assist in the handling of mail during the Christmas pressure period 72 Temporary Clerks and 135 casual labourers were engaged.

FINANCE

17. Revenue collected by the Department amounted to $173,796,120, an increase of $6,724,880 or 4% over the preceding

year.

18. Expenditure during the year amounted to $100,560,290, an increase of $5,128,268 or 5.4% over the previous year. This was mainly due to salary awards effective from 1st April, 1972 but there were also higher outpayments to other postal administrations to cover increased parcel terminals and transit credits, and increased shipping charges for the conveyance of mail.

19. The sales of duty stamps amounting to $5,218,375 were 5.9% less than sales in 1971-72. Postage stamps and meter impressions utilized to pay the fees on Certificates of Origin totalled $3,904,290, a decrease of $5,665 as compared with the previous year.

20. Payments made for telephone services provided for Govern- ment Departments amounted to $4,048,016, some $238,219 more than in the preceding year.

21. The total cash turnover in Post Office business, inclusive of postal remittance services, exceeded 367 million dollars, as compared with some 342 million dollars the previous year, an increases of 7.3%.

22. A graph showing revenue and expenditure trends over a number of years is at Appendix IV, whilst Appendix V shows a simple apportionment of revenue and expenditure during the year ended 31st March, 1973.
