Outward Parcel Sections. A second hutment is in course of construction for use as a mail storage and transit office. Planning is well in hand for a third structure on the site, and when this is completed, it will house the inward parcel office and enable the site for the new G.P.O. near Blake Pier to be cleared for construction work.

55. The removal of the parcel processing work from the G.P.O. building to the hutment on the Central Reclamation enabled work to proceed on a number of improvements within G.P.O. itself. The most notable of these was the modernization of the counter positions in the main public hall.

56. The British Post Office Consultancy Service were employed during the year to produce feasibility mechanization layouts for two major projects a new G.P.O, on Hong Kong Island and a new Colony Sorting Office at Hung Hom. On completion of these studies detailed planning of the new buildings will proceed.

57. Four new Post Offices were opened during the year-at Ngau Tau Kok, Kwai Fong, Lei Muk Shue and Canton Road-bringing the total number of Post Offices in service to 63. In addition to these new offices, the Post Office at Tse Wan Shan was reprovisioned in new accommodation.

58. Plans were completed and tenders let for the provision of a new chain conveyor connecting G.P.O. to the loading area on the Central Reclamation across Connaught Road. This will improve the flow of mail into and out of the G.P.O. which has become a problem since the widening of Connaught Road Central.

59. Before the close of the year, the Department advertised its intention to establish a pilot Postal Agency scheme in Hong Kong-an arrangement under which a local shopkeeper would contract to provide certain postal services on his own premises. Shek O has been selected for this experiment. If this scheme proves successful, it would be the Department's intention to extend it to other areas where full Post Offices cannot be justified.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS SERVICES

60. The establishment and operation of telecommunication services in Hong Kong is subject to the provisions of the Telecommunications Ordinance, which is administered by the Postmaster General as the Telecommunications Authority.
