satellite, telephone cable or tropospheric scatter systems. The rest are operated via the H.F., radio links. The introduction of the second dish to the earth station will greatly increase the number of areas which can be provided with telephone circuits via satellite.

International Television Service

90. International television transmission and reception services are available via the satellite stationed over the Pacific Ocean and will shortly be available also via the Indian Ocean satellite.

91. This service is available in black and white or colour in either 625 or 525 scanning lines per frame with a field frequency of either 50 or 60 respectively and colour systems of either PAL or NTSC respec- tively. Telecine equipment is available in Mercury House by means of which 16 mm. film can be transmitted on either 625/50/PAL or 525/ 60/NTSC standards.

Maritime Communications

92. Round the clock services are provided on H.F. and V.H.F. (known as Hague Plan) in connection with ships' radio-telegrams and radio-telephones between shore and ships. Radio-telegrams are admitted from any part of the world for transmission to ships at sea through our Hong Kong Coast Station 'VPS'. Radio-telephone calls between shore and ships are made in the same manner as are international telephone calls.

93. Telex service was introduced in July 1970 which permits telex communication, in either direction, between ships at sea and anywhere served by the international telex service.

94. Cable and Wireless Ltd. has 7 public counters for the acceptance of telegrams and radio-telephone calls. Some of them also provide public telex booths.
