72. Eight new Private Automatic Branch Exchange system were planned and completed during the year, including a major installation at the Fire Services Headquarters, Kowloon. Planning is also being undertaken for the provision of a further 15 P.A.B.X. systems for various Government Departments.

Technical Services

73. The Technical Section of the Division provides advisory, instal- lation and maintenance services for a variety of telecommunication and electronic systems and equipment being used by Government Depart- ments. Technical assessment of specific telecommunication requirements of some 22 departments were made and these included fixed and mobile V.H.F. and U.H.F. radio network, public address, radio paging and radio distribution systems and a language laboratory installation. In some cases installation of the equipment was subsequently undertaken.

74. Maintenance and repair work was carried out by the Workshops on a broad range of electronic and telecommunication equipment, including V.H.F. and U.H.F. radio links, electro-medical apparatus, radar systems, echo sounding equipment and many types of audio recording and reproduction equipment.

75. Assessment of tenders for miscellaneous equipment was under- taken and advice and recommendations concerning the provision of various systems given to Government Departments.

Public Telephone System

76. The Hong Kong Telephone Company, Limited, a Public Com- pany registered in Hong Kong with a nominal capital of HK$350 million, operates under a franchise from the Hong Kong Government which has been extended to 30th June, 1995, and provides all internal telephone services in the Colony. Telephone service to the rest of the world is also provided in conjunction with Cable and Wireless Ltd. and the Hong Kong operators have direct dialling access to distant subscribers in Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, United Kingdom, United States and West Germany. The number of overseas calls originating in Hong Kong con- tinues to increase and 194,459 more were completed in 1970 than the previous year.
