32. On the 31st March, 1969, there were 285 current Business Reply licences issued, 51 more than in the previous year.

Postage Meter Machines

33. The increasing recognition by business houses of the advantages of using postage meter machines was attested to by an increase in the number licenced from 452 to 523. Postage collected through meter accounts was nearly $24,000,000.

POSTAL SERVICES

34. The total of all postal articles processed during the year was estimated at 214,860,200. The decrease represented by this figure com- pared with last year's total of 228,385,600 reflects a change in the statistical procedure. In previous years the total of articles included in overseas mails was based upon sampling factors which fresh analysis has shown to have included some margin of error. The actual overall traffic after allowing for the above adjustment, is estimated to have been about 7% above that of the previous year.

Inland Services

35. The volume of letter mail posted for delivery within the Colony continues to increase and reached a total of more than 82 millions compared with 69 millions of the previous year. The local traffic has more than doubled since 1961 and has imposed pressure on our resources at each month's end and particularly at the end of each quarter when accounts and statements are posted in considerable quantity.

36. The system of recorded delivery which in March 1968 took the place of registration for many inland postings by Government Depart- ments gave a large measure of relief to the handling of normal registered mail; 769,937 official items of correspondence were sent by the new service and Departments have responded well to it. This relief, however, was partly offset by an increase in other inland registered postings which still reached a total of 2,254,209 items, a drop of only 359,062 on last year's total figure.

37. The internal parcel post service which had a fairly slow start when it was re-introduced in 1965 has proved a popular facility reaching
