Christmas Mails

50. An estimated 8 million letters and packets were posted in Hong Kong during the period 18th-24th December, slightly less than the total of 8.1 million for the same period in 1966. The quantities delivered during this period of 1967 from local and overseas sources increased however to a total of 11.5 million, 10% greater than in the previous year.

51. All mail posted and received by the advertised latest time was successfully cleared before Christmas Day, reflecting a commendable effort on the part of the staff. On the heaviest day 1.86 million items were delivered in the Colony.

Lunar New Year

52. Postings of letters and packets recorded for an eight day period over the New Year Festival totalled 4.2 million.

Parcel Post

53. Parcels for the overseas service reached a combined total of 2,151,918, or 3.4% above the 1966-67 level. Outward postings increased to 1,716,136, continuing the marked preponderance over incoming traffic which declined slightly to a total of 435,782.

54. More parcels were sent abroad by air parcel post than in any previous year. This traffic rose by 11% to a total of 642,915 and rep- resented 37.5% of the total of all parcels despatched from the Colony.

55. The internal parcel post service was utilized to a far greater extent by the public than at any time since the service was re-introduced in April 1965. The annual traffic handled by this service rose to a total of 19,835 compared against only 4,970 in the previous year.

56. There were 41 cases of violation of parcel mails during trans- mission to and from Hong Kong compared with 35 during the previous year. In no case was mail violated whilst in the custody of this Department.

Overseas Mails

57. The growing network of both sea and air services directly available from Hong Kong continued to provide excellent outlets for the despatch of mails to all places abroad. These services were kept
