Service Interruptions and Mail Losses

61. No serious disruptions of internal or external services occurred through the onset of typhoons experienced in Hong Kong during the year.

62. The tragic loss of a Canadian Pacific Air Lines' eastbound air- craft in March involved the destruction of a small quantity of mail originated in Hong Kong. Thanks to the excellent salvage service of the Japanese Postal Administration only minimal delay was imposed on the greater bulk of the mails.

63. The stranding of the s.s. 'Eastern Argosy' in Australian waters in January 1966 imposed a delay of about a month upon nearly a thousand bags of mails the vessel was carrying but fortunately no loss was incurred.

ACCOMMODATION

64. On 31st March, 1965 the total number of post offices in opera- tion was 44, including two mobile offices. During the year three new post offices were opened as follows:

bringing the total to 47 in operation on 31st March, 1966. Yuen Long Post Office moved from temporary accommodation to new premises on 17th January, 1966.

65. Re-arrangement of the operational accommodation in the G.P.O. Building was put in hand following the departure in March 1965 of the Head Office of the Housing Authority to its own new premises in Ma Tau Wei.

66. The development programme provides for the opening of a further seven new post offices in the next financial year.

67. Of the more important building projects the following informa- tion is reported:

(a) New General Post Office

Preliminary planning is continuing and a schedule of accom- modation has been submitted.
