force of 50 clerks and 80 labourers was engaged for the two weeks preceding Christmas to assist in handling the increase in mail traffic.

Chinese New Year

45. During the eight-day period over the Chinese New Year a total of 2,345,620 items were machine date-stamped as compared with 2,156,927 during the same period in the previous year. Temporary labourers were employed to assist in dealing with these postings.

Parcel Post

46. Parcel post traffic continued to rise, a total of 1,786,454 (includ- ing 17,045 parcels in transit) being handled during the year, showing an increase of 201,971 parcels or 12.8% over last year's traffic.

47. Air parcels posted (including insured parcels) numbered 394,158 and those received 93,583, showing a rise of 25.9% as compared with the traffic of the previous year.

48. There were 45 cases of violation of parcel 'mails all of which occurred before the relative ships or aircraft arrived in the colony or after the departure of the vessels. No cases of violation of mails whilst in the custody of this administration were recorded.

49. During the year the volume of mail justified direct despatches being made up to the following places and countries:
