94. Radio-telephone service is available to most parts of the world in co-operation with Cable & Wireless Limited.

Other Communications

95. Cable and Wireless Ltd. are responsible for all telegraph, Telex and radiotelephone services between Hong Kong and countries overseas and the following paragraphs give details of their activities in these and other fields during the year under review and their efforts to improve standards wherever possible in line with technical developments.

96. With the Commonwealth Pacific Cable (COMPAC) in operation since December 1963, all important telegraph, telephone and Telex circuits with Europe have been transferred from the radio to the radio/cable system via Sydney, and a decided improvement in efficiency has been noticed.

97. Besides having to cope with increased traffic, Cable and Wireless, Hong Kong, also had to carry out work preparatory to the landing of the South East Asia section of the Commonwealth cable (SEACOM). When completed in 1965 SEACOM will link Hong Kong to COMPAC with direct cable connexions to Europe and the U.S.A. in addition to countries in South East Asia. The Commonwealth cable will provide 80 high quality circuits which will not be subject to the fading and atmospheric conditions affecting radio links. Marked improvement in all telecom- munication services between Hong Kong and other countries is an- ticipated.

Ship/Shore V.H.F. Radiotelephone Service

98. The Maritime V.H.F. Hague Plan Service was introduced on 1st August, 1963. The normal working range is about 50 miles, but tests have proved that excellent contacts can be established with ships up to a distance of 120 miles. This service is intended to supplement the ordinary Short Wave Radiotelephone service with ships and the Ocean Radiotelephone service, both of which have been in operation for many years. The facilities for speech communications with ships outside Hong Kong have thus been considerably augmented.

Telex Service

99. This subscriber-to-subscriber telegraph service is enjoying a rapidly growing popularity. As compared with the year 1962-63, Telex traffic increased by approximately 50%. Fifty-seven new Telex subscribers
