43. To assist in clearing the heavy Christmas postings a force of 28 temporary clerical officers and 80 temporary labourers was employed for a period of two weeks.
44. A total of 1,535,851 items were machine stamped in a nine day period over the Chinese New Year as compared with 1,499,366 items over the same period in 1961. Temporary labourers were again employed to assist the permanent uniformed staff.
Parcel Post
45. Parcel post traffic showed a substantial increase. The total of 1,359,411 (including 29,716 parcels in transit) gave an overall increase of 178,919 parcels or 15.7 per cent over the figure for the previous year.
46. Air parcels posted numbered 214,090 and those received 68,189, which showed an increase of 25 per cent and 3 per cent respectively over the totals of the previous year.
47. New direct closed surface parcel despatches were introduced to San Salvador (El Salvador), Guatemala Ciudad (Guatemala), Ocean Islands and Vientiane (Laos).
48. A parcel acceptance service was introduced at the So Uk Post Office on 4th April, 1961.
49. The violation of parcel mails showed a slight decrease and altogether 18 cases involving the violation of 31 parcels were recorded. Strong representations were made in each case to the shipping companies concerned.
50. Facilities were introduced for the acceptance of insured and Cash-on-Delivery parcels at all Branch Offices. A 'Returned Parcel Office' responsible for handling all returned and charged parcels was set up in the Inward Parcel Section.
Registration and Insurance
51. The number of registered and insured items handled totalled 5,418,504 exceeding last year's total by 1,218,595 items or approximately 29 per cent. Registered letters and packets to the People's Republic of China made up for a large portion of this increase.

52. As previously mentioned, the registered air mail despatching section was removed to the Air Mail Centre, Kai Tak, during the year.
