OTHER COMMUNICATIONS
112. Cable and Wireless Limited is responsible for all telegraph, telex and radiotelephone services between Hong Kong and countries overseas, telegraph and radiotelephone services with ships at sea, and a V.H.F. radiotelephone service with ships in Hong Kong harbour. In addition, a service is provided for inland telegrams on Hong Kong Island and in the New Territories.
113. The Company is also responsible for the technical maintenance of the Colony's Aeradio and Meteorological radio services, the Govern- ment broadcasting service, and the V.H.F. communications of various Government departments.
114. The despatch, reception and relaying of telegrams is the Company's principal business. The number of telegrams handled, in- cluding those in transit, is approximately 2,500,000 a year. The tele- graphic communications of the Colony are well served by several deep sea cables linked to the Company's worldwide network of 142,500 miles of submarine cables, and by 19 direct high speed wireless telegraph circuits working with other centres in the Far East and beyond. During the year one new radiotelegraph circuit was opened to Rangoon.
115. The overseas radiotelephone services, worked in collaboration with the Hong Kong Telephone Company, continue to expand. Services are now also available with Rangoon, Colombo and Cambodia. New relay services via Hong Kong have been opened between Seoul/ Australia, Taipei/Karachi, Taipei/United Kingdom and Seoul/Macao. The existing telephone schedules to some places were extended in length.
116. The Company's Harborphone service continues to be exten- sively used. Any ship within the harbour limits can be fitted with a V.H.F. radiotelephone installation on hire, giving direct communication between ship and ship, or between ship and any subscriber on the Hong Kong telephone exchange.
117. Telex continues to make great strides since its opening in 1959. With the installation of the new automatic system in May 1960 the expansion of this service went ahead rapidly. Telex service is now available with Argentine, Brazil, Chile, India, New Zealand and Taipei.
118. The Printergram service, which is the teleprinter service for acceptance and delivery of telegrams, continues to expand owing to the increased number of teleprinters now in use by customers.
