and for a VHF radiotelephone service with ships in Hong Kong harbour. In addition, a service is provided for internal telegrams on Hong Kong Island and in the New Territories.
104. The Company is also responsible for the technical maintenance of the Colony's Aeradio and Meteorological radio services, the Govern- ment broadcasting service and the VHF communications of various Government departments.
105. The despatch, reception and relaying of telegrams is the Com- pany's principal business. The number of telegrams handled, including those in transit, is approximately 3,000,000 a year. The telegraphic communications of the Colony are well served by several deep sea cables linked to the Company's worldwide network of 142,500 miles of sub- marine cables, and by eighteen direct high speed wireless telegraph circuits working with other centres in the Far East and beyond. During the year one new radio-telegraph circuit was opened to Sydney, Australia.
106. The overseas radiotelephone services, worked in collaboration with the Hong Kong Telephone Company Limited, continued to expand. Services are now also available to Pakistan, Burma, Ghana and Nigeria. New relay services via Hong Kong have been opened between Macao/ Eire, Jesselton/Eire, Seoul/Bangkok. The existing telephone schedules to some places were extended in length.
107. The Company's 'Harborphone' service continued to be exten- sively used. Any ship within the harbour limits can be fitted with a VHF radiotelephone installation on hire giving direct communication between ship and ship, or between ship and any subscriber on the Hong Kong telephone exchange.
108. Telex made great strides since its opening in May 1959 and this service appears to be catching on very well in Hong Kong. With the coming installation of the new automatic system in early May 1960, and the anticipated arrival of additional subscribers equipment very shortly, the expansion of this service will go ahead rapidly. Telex service is now available to Australia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Eire, Europe, Honolulu, Japan, Lagos, Malaya, Manila, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Southern Rhodesia, South Africa, Venezuela, United Kingdom and the United States of America.
109. The Printergram service, which is a teleprinter service for acceptance and delivery of telegrams, continued to expand owing to the increased number of teleprinters now in use by customers. The automatic
