10. Total Revenue collections of the Department for the first time passed $30,000,000, the actual total of $31,437,491.77 being no less than $4,565,491.77 over the Estimate. Over $3,000,000 of this was in respect of increased postage collections.
11. Wireless Revenue, too, continued its upward surge with a record total of $2,184,125.50 or $398,125.50 over the Estimate, a further increase of over 11% in Broadcast Receiving Licences being matched by a similar increase in Rediffusion Subscribers.
12. Despite heavily increased traffic as reflected in Revenue receipts, total Expenditure at $15,789,725.38 exceeded the Estimate by only $173,175.38. Excesses occurred only in the Revenue producing items of Money Order Services, Conveyance of Surface Mails and Parcel Post. In the last named the excess was mainly due to increased outpayments to other Administra- tions. On all other items of expenditure savings were effected. 13. The only increases in postal rates during the year were in various parcel charges. The increases were entirely due to increased charges claimed by other Administrations coupled with general increases in freight charges, and were thus unavoidable.
14. A further stamp selling machine was installed in the Public Hall of the General Post Office. At the same time it was found possible to overcome the structural difficulties of external installation and an external machine for all night use was finally installed in March, 1957.
Services to other Departments
15. The value of free services to other Departments again showed an appreciable increase to $411,806.
POSTAL SERVICES
16. General. There was a further increase in the number of bags of mail of 14,599 to a total of 356,258 or practically 1,000 bags per day. Of this total, 65,463 were received from the China Mainland.
17. Letters and packets totalled 128,431,218 or 4% above the previous year, excluding parcels, registered and insured
