appreciated to the full by students and go far in maintaining the high standard of efficiency, of which the Department is now justifiably proud.

93. Main welfare activities were, however, centred in the Post Office Recreation Club which continues to be well supported, particularly in the sporting sphere.

94. In addition to football, tennis, table tennis and badminton, at all of which the respective teams acquitted themselves well, a new competition for swimming was introduced to compete for a cup presented by Mr. Crook, Deputy Postmaster General.

95. The competition, which was held at the Y.M.C.A. by courtesy of the Secretary, was keenly contested, the final honours in an excellent display being taken by the Hong Kong Postmen.

CONCLUSION

96. This is the last Departmental report which I shall write before my retirement and I cannot let the opportunity pass without placing on record my sincere gratitude to all members of my staff for their unfailing support, not only in the difficult period of rehabilitation, but in coping with the unprecedented growth in business which has accrued in recent years.

97. My period of office has been one of continual planning and reorganization to fit the proverbial quart into a pint pot. Without exception, since I took office I have had to report fresh records year after year.

98. With our rates among the cheapest in the world, the fact that revenue nowadays is almost double the expenditure will make it obvious that such results have only been achieved by sheer efficiency and hard work and I should be failing in my duty, and morally, if I omitted to thank those who have made possible the achievement of my plans.

99. My Department has a wonderful team who work not only as a team but as a friendly family of which I am proud to have been regarded as the father.

100. Thank you all.

L. C. SAVILLE, Postmaster General.
