82. During the year new radiotelegraph services with Laos, Phnompenh and Tokyo have been opened. Channelling facilities involving new techniques have been installed on the Singapore and Tokyo routes, making additional circuits available for leasing to commercial firms.

83. Large extensions to the existing aerial systems have been made at the main transmitting and receiving stations. New equipment of advanced design, both for transmitting and receiving, has been installed.

84. At the Peak new multichannel radiotelephone equipment has been put into service on the Canton Circuit.

85. Receiving circuits are being moved one at a time from the congested area of Kai Tak to the new receiving station at Mount Butler, with the expected large increase in efficiency.

86. The despatch, reception and relaying of telegrams is the Company's principal business. The number of telegrams handled, including those in transit, is approximately 3,000,000 a year. The telegraphic communications of the Colony are well served by several deep sea cables linked to the Company's world wide network of 150,000 miles of submarine cables and their 14 direct high speed wireless telegraph circuits working with other centres in the Far East and beyond. Service to the public was again improved during the year by laying a second high speed cable connecting Hong Kong with Manila.

87. The overseas radiotelephone services, worked in col- laboration with the Hong Kong Telephone Company, Limited, continued to expand. During 1955, new services were opened to the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Saigon, Peru and Uruguay, thus extending the radiotelephone service from Hong Kong to over fifty different countries. Radio- telephone relay services were opened between Macao and Chile, Hawaii and Mexico, and between Sydney and Jesselton and Labuan.
