47. With both the Christmas and Chinese New Year pressure periods there is an obvious local tendency to combine messages of goodwill with trade inquiry, but such commercial- ization of the "Spirit" of these festive seasons does not help in the handling of the mail since any sort of separation is impossible.
DELIVERY ARRANGEMENTS
48. The continued growth of traffic; the rapid erection of large blocks of multi-storeyed flats for housing schemes; resettlement of squatters etc. and the continued spread of development generally all create daily problems of excess loads and extended "walks" for the uniformed staff, and reshuffling and reorganization is a constant headache.
49. A number of additional postmens' "walks" were created both on the Island and in Kowloon and the New Territories. Additionally, a postmens delivery direct from General Post Office to Ping Chau Island was commenced on 2nd August, 1955.
50. With the co-operation of the Police Department delivery service was introduced to outlying islands which had not previously been "on the Postal map".
51. As referred to in paragraph 44, the delivery staff are badly overloaded at the Christmas and Chinese New Year rush periods. They co-operate loyally and evoke much public praise and sympathy, but saturation point has been reached and temporary carrying staff will be essential at these periods in future.
PRIVATE BOXES
52. The difficulty in obtaining adequate permanent business accommodation makes the possession of a Post Office Box number an important business requisite and the waiting lists of applicants grows daily.
