and the benefit to the efficiency of the Post Office has been well illustrated in the more efficient work carried out by those attending the classes.

109. One Post Office clerk was recommended for, and cbtained, a Colonial Development and Welfare Scholarship. He left in June, 1954, for a year's course of study in the United Kingdom Post Office.

110. Canteen Facilities. A new Canteen was organized in the Victoria Post Office during the year, as the old one was considered to be unsatisfactory. Prices were controlled by the Postmaster General and frequent inspections made. The new Canteen has proved extremely popular. Rest rooms were made available to both the clerical and uniformed grades at the Head Office, and the new Kowloon sorting office, whilst provision for rest rooms and Canteens has been included in the plans for new Branch Offices.

CONCLUSION

111. This year has been another eventful one for the Hong Kong Post Office and the progress and improvements made will have been seen from the figures and sectional notes con- tained in this report. This progress has been made despite the shortage of office space, Branch and Sub-Offices with which we have had to contend, although everything possible has been done to obtain additional accommodation.

112. Despite the heavy calls made upon the Department by the increase in work it has had to handle, there has been no relaxation in its efforts to keep pace with the needs and rapid growth of the Colony and to render a service of a high quality. The Post Office is confident that progress will be maintained in the current year and it derives this confidence from the loyal and zealous devotion to duty of its officers, to whom every credit is due.

A. G. CROOK, Acting Postmaster General.
