Lourenço Marques, Dar-es-salaam, Kampala, Nairobi, Salisbury (Southern Rhodesia), Tamatave, Cape Town, and Lagos. This increase in despatches further complicated the great shortage of space in the parcel despatching section as new fittings had to be provided for the additional despatches.
42. Parcel despatches were also received for the first time from Rijeka (Yugoslavia), Mahé (Seychelles), Tegucigalpa (Honduras), and Labuan.
43. The additional shipping facilities which became avail- able during the year made possible a re-routing of parcels to many destinations and gave acceleration in transit. In particular it was possible to forward more mail via Genoa for South and East European destinations. It was also possible to introduce a despatch to Perth, Australia, to accommodate and speed up delivery of parcels to destinations in Western Australia.
44. Air parcels showed a remarkable increase and this has been dealt with under the section dealing with air mails.
45. Three electric machines for issuing gummed labels for parcels showing the amount of postage paid were introduced during the year and helped to some extent in the more efficient handling of the heavy postings brought about by the increase in parcel traffic.
REGISTRATION AND INSURANCE
46. The total number of registered and insured items dealt with during the year was 2,241,799. This figure was only exceeded during the boom year 1950/51, and represents an increase of 67,795 items over the total handled during the pre- ceeding year.
On the other hand the total of items received for Hong Kong delivery showed a decrease of 52,220. Registration and insurance services to the China Mainland remained suspended.
