The following amounts were collected:-

SERVICES TO OTHER DEPARTMENTS

The value of free services rendered to other Depart- ments was estimated at $157,613.

POSTAL SERVICES

9. General. The total number of bags of mail handled was 286,503 as compared with 283,383 in 1952/53. This excludes a total of 116,560 bags of parcel mail. The total approximates to a daily average of over 1,100 bags.

10. The total number of mail item-excluding registered items and parcels-reached a new record level by exceeding the 100 million mark for the first time at 104,485,654.

SURFACE MAILS

11. The shipping situation continued to improve through- out the year and fast additional services were offered by new Italian and German Lines. Altogether 2,709 steamers of various nationalities were utilized for despatch of mail. Freight rates generally continued to rise-particularly on Pacific routes--but at the close of the year signs of stabilization in this direction were becoming evident.
