35. The total royalties indicate approximately 46,421 sub- scribers or an increase of 5,421 over the total for 1951/52 and this increase, following an increase in the previous year of over 5,300 subscribers is sufficient indication that this service meets a very big public need.
WIRELESS SURVEYS & INSPECTIONS
36. In continuation of its important functions under the convention for Safety of Life at Sea, the Wireless Inspectorate Branch carried out 173 surveys of ships radio stations, 51 in- spections of ships, and one of an aircraft radio station. 19 ships direction finders were also calibrated during the year.
CONTRAVENTIONS OF THE TELECOMMUNICATION ORDINANCE
37. There were 105 successful prosecutions during the year including 13 cases of illegal transmitters procuring fines up to $4,000. The remainder represented unlicensed broadcast receiving cases where fines between $10 and $50 were imposed.
EXAMINATIONS
38. Examinations for the Postmaster General's Certificates of proficiency in Wireless Telegraphy were conducted at the Hong Kong Technical School by arrangement with the Hon. Director of Education, with the following results:

39. The examination of import and export declarations in respect of wireless apparatus was continued in co-operation with the Department of Commerce and Industry.
