47. Two recreation rooms, one for the clerical and one for the uniformed staff were provided in the G.P.O. Building. A former combined staff recreation room had to be taken over for clerical office accommodation earlier in the year due to phasing of the building operations then in hand.

48. The Post Office canteen continued to function and provided cheap meals and light refreshments not only to the postal staff but to employees of the various other government departments located in the G.P.O. Building.

49. The Recreation Club was granted a ten years lease on the Caroline Hill grounds on a shared basis with Cable & Wire~ less Ltd. With this security of tenure confirmed and the club reconstituted, arrangements were put in hand to have a per- manent clubhouse erected. By the end of March the building was well advanced; the project was being financed from club funds assisted by an interest-free overdraft granted by the Hong Kong Bank.

CONCLUSION

50. The partial alterations and introduction of modern fittings to which reference has already been made have resulted in a satisfactory step-up in efficiency so that nowadays it is possible to keep to a reasonable time schedule. That it was possible to carry out these reforms without interrupting the flow of traffic can only reflect the highest praise on all those con- cerned. To continue to handle over 200,000 items of mail daily in the midst of building alterations, furniture changes and the inevitable and consequential spring cleaning without the advantage of alternative premises was a task of no little magnitude and my sincere thanks and appreciation are due to all members of the staff for their commendable efforts and loyal co-operation through this trying period.
