(C) BROADCASTING.
21. Mr. D. Keith Hardy assumed duty as Programme Secretary Z.B.W. on 2nd May, 1947.
Transmissions.
was
22. In September the Sunday morning programme started 2 hours earlier at 10.30 and an additional 15 minutes were added on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays to cover in each case the Broadcasting of religious services. On November 30th the basic hours of broadcasting were increased from 6 to 61 hours plus the extensions referred to above.
Programmes.
23. During the year considerable efforts were made to raise the standard of broadcasting from both stations and, despite difficulties of staff and accommodation, much was achieved.
24. The main source of programme material remains of necessity the B.B.C. and consists of script, transcribed programmes and direct relays. Increasing advantage is, however, being taken of local talent and by bringing to the microphone distinguished visitors to the Colony. The Chinese Station has been particularly handicapped by the shortage of Cantonese records but there are signs of a distinct improvement in that direction in the near future.
Licences.
25. There was a gratifying increase in the number of licences which in March, 1948 stood at 24,164 as against 13,592 in April, 1947.
26. The former total comprised 21,540 Non-European and 2,624 European licences. The cost of a receiving licence has been
maintained at $12.
