Annual Report of Telecommunications Branch,

Post Office Dept., for year ending 31st March, 1947.

RADIO SERVICES

Marine Services.

The long distance (high frequency) service for British shipping operated in combination with the Royal Navy is settling down and the service is improving.

The improvised transmitter used to reopen the medium-wave service has been replaced by commercial equipment. This in turn is due to be replaced by higher power transmitters whose delivery is overdue.

At the end of the year under review transmitters were arriving for a long distance (high frequency) service for non-British shipping.

New receivers have been received and installed at the receiving station (Observatory), and a line supply unit made up locally for remote keying of the transmitters at Cape D'Aguilar.

A steamer reporting service is in operation by radio from Waglan Island lighthouse, using temporary equipment to be replaced by V.H.F. when it arrives.

A petrol-electric generator has been installed for emergency power supply.

A summary of traffic handled is included in Appendix A.

Aeronautical Services.

Government operation of these services has been considerably expanded during the year. Five transmitters are now in use for point to point, and meteorological traffic. Three of these transmitters are still on loan from the R.A.F. pending further arrivals of our own equipment.

Arrangements are being made to take over further extensive aeradio commitments from the R.A.F. including A.S.V., Babs, V.H.F., M.F. beacons, and various additional communications channels.

The receiving station at Kai Tak has been reconstructed with new apparatus and although in temporary quarters is functioning well.

Various aerial systems have been erected.

A summary of traffic handled is included in Appendix A.
