5B. Where provision is made by the law of any part of the Commonwealth, other than Hong Kong, for the grant of certificates of competency as A.B., and the Director reports to the Governor that he is satisfied that the conditions under which such a certificate is granted require standards of competency not lower than those required for the grant of a certificate of competency as A.B. under rules made under section 6, the Governor may by order published in the Gazette direct that the certificates granted in that part of the Commonwealth shall have the same effect for the purposes of this section and sections 5A and 6 as if they had been granted under such rules.

6. (1) The Director shall cause examinations to be conducted in respect of persons in the mercantile marine who wish to obtain certificates of competency as seamen, other than officers, of the prescribed classes, and shall appoint examiners for that purpose. Every such appointment shall be notified in the Gazette. (Amended, 62 of 1981, s. 5)

(2) The Director of Marine may make rules prescribing or providing for—

(a) classes of seamen, other than officers, for the purposes of

subsection (1); (Amended, 62 of 1981, s. 5)

(b) the standards of competency to be attained and other conditions to be satisfied (subject to any exceptions allowed by or under the rules) by candidates for any examination conducted under subsection (1);

(c) the procedure for and the method of conducting any such

examinations;

(d) the subjects to be taken at any such examination or the

manner in which those subjects are to be specified;

(e) fees and forms in relation to any such examination; and

(f) the method of granting certificates of competency and

copies of such certificates.
