E it enacted by the Governor of Hongkong, with the advice of the

Legislative Council thereof, as follows:---

1. This Ordinance may be cited as the Census Ordinance, 1881. 2.—(1.) The Governor-in-Council may authorize and direct a census to be taken of the inhabitants of the Colony at such times as he thinks fit, and may from time to time appoint and remove such officers as may be necessary for the purpose.

(2.) Notice of the intention to take such census, and of the date of such intended taking, shall be published in The Gazette at least ten days previously.

3. The officers appointed to take the census shall, in accordance with the instructions of the Governor, make such arrangements as may be necessary for the purpose.

4. Schedules shall be prepared, under the direction of the Governor, for the purpose of being filled up by or on behalf of the several occupiers of every dwelling house or place of residence in the Colony, and by or on behalf of the persons on board every vessel in the waters of the Colony, with such particulars as to the Governor-in-Council may seem fit.
