VENTILATION OF GA. There is an amendment in the use of gas, by the way, of very general requirement, which may here be noted down while we think of it. Indeed, we have already done so in more instances than one, but the importance and general want of such an amendment induces us here to repeat the obvious sugges. tion that means for the proper ventilation of the injurious products generated in the burning of gas within doors ought to be insisted on, and provided, either by the 'force of public enlightenment on the subject, or of legislative enactment itself in course of the proposed amendments. Gas burners consume the vital air no less than human lungs, and we are at this moment in as lamentably defective and abori giual a state of progress with respect to the ventilation of the deleterious products of gas burning as our aboriginal progenitors were with respect to the ventilation of their domestic hearths while chimneys were unknowa.-The Builder.

THE FAMILY OF LOGS PHILLIPPE. The following graphic account is an ex- tract from a letter written by a young lady, during her temporary residance in Paris, to a friend in this country We were at one of the King's presentations at the hich we tely for the pre-Tuileries on Tuesday Inst. There were upwards of 4000 people. We enjoyed ace secure and com. burselves very much it was a beautiful sight, the rooms are so fine, and were He so beautifully lighted. The soldier, condemned to an exile which the military resources of his country,

ntry do not slow to be curtailed, is made more susceptible of thsease by dispondency. With the long-deferred hope of visiting England at Jagt languishes the energy which had kept him alive; be droops he dies. Thus gradually, man by nan are those masses of ralour and enthusiasm mown donp which left England in the flush of hope and the booyancy of youth. But it was not climate mor time that alone spread death through the ranks of the 31st. They had already seen a period of service three times as long as that which is exacted from the Prussian soldiers, without the opportunity of earning anything beyond the praise of having performed an obscure and inevitable duty with fidelity. But it was not for this that they were welcomed by applauding shouts when they landed in England; it was not the recollection of a com mon and routine virtue that thrilled in the hearts of the thousands who met and escorted the regiment. aid repeated acclamations, to Chatham." It was the memory of the hard fought battles of the Sutlej, Kindled afresh by the sight the trophies which the victors had brought home. Four standards, one won from the field of Ferozeshah, one from Aliwal, and two from Sobraon, reminded the spec tators how well the glory of England had been preserved by her soldiers in the far East. Bul 10ore deeply touching than the sight of spoil or trophy were the old colours of the regiment, forn to sbreds by the arrowy sleet of grape-shot, but carried through the thickest of the carnage, and up to the muzzles of the Sikh.runs, by officers whose life-blood was shed in their defence. Such a consummation-as far as the greatness of achiere. ments is concerned-compensates for the long and tedious inactivity which preceded it. This is one side of the picture. Let us now turn to the others, less cheering by far. It is not in the nature of right- thinking men to disconnect important services from those by whom they were conferred. Nor should blast to do.
