Commander W. J. C. Clifford, of the Wolverine, 10, sloop, at Chine, has succeeded Commander Sir William Hoste. Bart, in command of the Ringdove, 18, sloop, at Hongkong, Sir Willem having been appointed to the command of the Spiteful, steam sinap, vice Commander Maitland, deceased and joined that vessel ut Bombay, by the Peninsular and Oriental Company's steamer. Here is a little in teresting history. Sir William Hoste commission od the Ringdove at Devonport, December 1845, and just reached China for three or four your service when the comminand of the Spiteful becomes vacant. The Spiteful is peremptory ordered home, having been in commission now nearly four years; and instead of allowing the first lieutenant (1938) who has been in her all the time and who is now in ach lug command to bring her to England, and thereby olitain the
e best chance for his promotion, Sir William is appointed to the agreeable post, by which he not only completes his line for a captain, but most agreeably so in a voyage to and from China, and comes to England without the expense of an overland passage Commander Clifford, on other band, has had more than two years command in the Wolvere, but not haring, such interest as Bir William Hoste, he get a further term of ser vice, in a ship just arrived on the alarit

port, that he had moved with all the fore
upon Mullakot, that he found the Mulkoas posted filte neighbourhood, but that scarcely had his guns open ed upon them when they dispersed. He was sub sequently reinforced by the Lahore troo Khan Singh (Man) accompanied by Lacatenant Lumsden, and announced himself to be busy pacje ficating the country, while his colleagues were building a strong fort at Mullakot. The fugitivo insurgents are briefly alluded to as having sought refuge in the mountains, and as being desirous of negotiating for submission provided they were le niently dealt with in person and property; that is of course the chiefs. Uncertainty however seems to a degree to invest all these accounts, that of an hour's age contradicting with no particular deco- rum, a predecessor not much more venerable, but usually with this extent of courtesy that it does not refer at all to its existence. Thus for example besides the upharmonising narratives of Birdar Go- laub Singh's progress, it appears peculiarly impro bable that the Lahore troops would be busied in the erection of fortresses within territories that now belong to the Maharajah of Jamoo and have been formally made over to him. Nothing additionel has transpired with reference to the reasons which induce the British authorities to persevere in the course they are now pursuing in the Hazarche. The report that got abroad about the 10th Fool being onderad for service, apparently in these distur bed districts, seems yet unsettled. The Delhi Ga- zette who first announced it to us, aubsequently appeared to think that Peshawar, and not Mullakot, was the destination of this regiment. Whether such an idea had ever been in contemplation at head quarters, we are not in a position to say, whe- ther having been entertained it was ultimately drop. ped from a regard to the malarious atmosphere of Peshawar during the hot months, especially where Europeans are concerned, we are not better quali fod to speculate upon. This soficient therefore to jot down the latest Cynthia of the minute, which is
that they do not exacly know. the confession of our Northwestern contemporaries
In the yet more northerly distrrots, beyond the Indus, of Bunnoo and Tank, which are but little known to us except through occasional notices, an the Durbar minutes, of their refractory zemindara, we find that their conscientious objections to the settlement of their accounts with the State have drawn Col. Lawrence's marked attentions to them,
General Courtland has accordingly been deepal- ched with an adequate force into the country, aci companied by Cap Edwardes, and there is no reason to expect any opposition to the measures they will find it expedient to carry out.
The intelligence from Peshawar comes to us not through the Delhi's local correspondent as usual, but filtered of much truth, through the little lattle of the Durbar. There had been a report that some of the local troops in their expectation of being disbanded, had prevailed upon their comrades to take the in- itiative in a general desertion into Affghanistan, The new forces who are to move in and garrison this province, will be commanded by a third Galab Siugh (Povinden.) This last mentioned Sirdar may be remembered by some of our military readers, as the commander of the Seikh auxiliaries who accom panied Sir George Pollock mlo Cebul, and who bat for the intervention of Col. Lawrence murdered their commander at Vellalab
